Pirates of the Caribbean ~ Mahabharata Analogue
One of my fellow blogger has an
interesting analogue between the characters of the film ‘The Matrix’ to Mahabharata
– the Indian Epic. I was spellbound by the similarities that were brought on
the table between these two. The facts were well supported with the intentions,
reasoning, reach of the characters of the movie with this magnificent epic. The
relations between them were so profound. The extent of analysis and the deep
evaluation of the characters’ exploration gave a better perspective and
increased focus on the Million years old epic and their characters. It was an enthralling
experience to learn about the totally new dimensions of Science against the Vedas.
Now here comes my take, although
a Novice one focusses on the most famous, successful and well received – the Pirates
of the Caribbean series with the epic ‘Mahabharata’. Although there aren’t much
characters like the film ‘The Matrix’ and their lesser similarity with this
golden epic, here and there, are a few notations that exhibit some flavors of
this great epic. In both the movie and the epic, all characters are moving
towards a specific path – defined and needed by each one of them. Both of them
have many twists and turns in screenplay. Some characters are confused about
their Dharma. Most of the characters have divine powers/skills and few are
cursed.
Below are few of the similarities
explained in detail.,
- Captain Hector Barbossa and his crew are cursed of “undeath”. They appear as heavily decomposed corpses when in moonlight. In Mahabharata, Karna is cursed by Parashurama who accused him of stealing knowledge, and laid a curse upon him that he would forget all the knowledge required to wield the “Brahmastra”
- Will Turner is in love with Elizabeth. He wants to marry her. Elizabeth is sought by many men but it is Will Turner who finally marries her. In Mahabharata, Arjuna wants to marry Dhraupadi.
- Will Turner who wants to live a free life – live a normal life becomes a Pirate. The destiny makes him a Pirate. Will Turner fights the Flying Dutchman in which his own Father is a crew member. In Mahabharata, Arjuna is forced to battle his own kith and kin.
- Captain Jack Sparrow leads Will Turner to Davvy Jones to get the key which is needed to kill Davvy Jones. He puts Will Turner in troubles also gives him advice on few occasions. He is the most cunning and unbelievable, selfish character who wants his own motives to be fulfilled. In Mahabharata, Arjuna is saved by Shri Krishna and he shares the Bhagavad Gita.
- Davvy Jones has all ingredients of Bad ideologies and he kills every man who opposes him. In Mahabharata, Duryodhana is the bad guy who acts against good.
- Captain Jack Sparrow is the one who knows how to Kill Davvy Jones. In Mahabharata, Shri Krishna alone knows how Duryodhana can be killed. He advises Bhima on how to do so.
- Captain Jack Sparrow is in command of the BlackPearl while In Mahabharata, Shri Krishna is in command of Arjuna’s Chariot.
So to some extent the characters
of the Pirates of the Caribbean bear similarities with the epic characters in Mahabharata.
Jack Sparrow -> Shri Krishna ; Elizabeth -> Dhraupadi ;
Will Turner ->
Arjuna ; Davvy Jones -> Duryodhana
