Top 5 Football Leagues of the World

You’re full of life, if you’re a football fan. Few believe football is not just a game of life and death, it’s much more than that. This is a game that is widely played and followed all over the world. A game that unites people across religion, castes, boundaries and continents. There’s love, hatred, agony, ecstasy – you name it, everything is embedded in this beautiful game that’s a pure delight to play and watch. Like many, I too have been caught by this fever for long – ever since 1998. Until then I was a Cricket fan and the introduction and magnificence of this game has turned and evolved me as a person in life. I’ve learned a lot from this game and it is not just about the game - I’ve learned a lot about life as well. There have been players who were more famous than the Presidents of the World – Players who were worshiped. The play, the game itself is Godly. There are very few things that are more beautiful and lively than football. A game that has spanned for over 120 years in most countries, is still the best sought after. This game never dies and the fan following would never end. Football is mightier than love. It’s bigger than life itself.

I’ve been a great follower of World football (both countries and Football Clubs). I am the biggest fan of Lionel Messi and Football Club Barcelona and German National Football team. From a neutral perspective, I’d like to bring the top 5 Football leagues in this world. Apparently all these leagues have been played for over 100 years now and all of these leagues are played in Europe. According to the trophies that clubs have won playing across nations and the amount of individual player awards the clubs have garnered over the years, I’ve categorized the top 5 Football leagues in this world. Here’s my List (in descending order)…

  • Ligue 1 (France) – Marseille, Monaco and PSG are the notable teams in this league. More often the race is one sided. The clubs in this league haven’t been great performers in the Europa/Champions League. The fan following is huge –no doubt on that, but the quality of the play on field is not on par with other competitive leagues in the world. Quite often, one club dominates and continues to win the league.

  • Bundesliga (Germany) – Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are the notable teams in this league. Of late, Bayern has been the sole contender in winning the titles.  The quality of the teams is good - especially they are great offensively. They pass the ball well and create chances. In fact, they have the ability to convert chances into goals to a large extent.  They have performed considerably well in the Champions/Europa league.

  • Serie A (Italy) – Perhaps the best defensive clubs are available in this league. Few believe Italy is like a Fort. It is tough to break barriers and demolish the Fort. Structurally perhaps they are the best in the world but offensively they lag behind other leagues. They are not high scorers and doesn’t have had great strikers but they enjoy strong defensive midfielders of the past and present. AC Milan, AS Roma, Inter Milan and Juventus are biggest clubs of Europe. Juventus have been dominating the race over the last few years.

  • La Liga (Spain) – My personal favorite. Although it is dual in nature with titles shared between Barcelona and Real Madrid other notable teams like Valencia, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid have been great in the Europa Leagues. It is extremely superior that the entire world gets succumbed and held defeated by Barcelona/Real Madrid in the Champions League. Almost any other team wishes to avoid these two in any competitive game fearing loss. Perhaps the best league containing the two best teams in the world with the best players of history playing/having played. The players brought from their academy are the world’s best. As far as talent is concerned, this is the best place to be.

  • Premier League (England) – The most competitive league. Physically hard. Lot of teams having the capability to win titles and it is never a 2/3-way race. The battle for top 8 positions are always on and it is tough for the bookies to predict the top 8 spots. Every week brings new and rearranged table. The teams have failed to impress on big occasions in the Champions/Europa league but they are the best internally. Every match brings surprises. It is interesting to watch this league because talent is distributed and the players with equal skills are across teams. Their spending is average in bringing new talents. For viewers, they enjoy these games a lot and the teams as well strive hard to be in the top 6 table. As far as excitement is concerned, this is the best place to be.
