[90s ~ A Celebration] - Movies #India

90s was the time when Movies in South India flourished. We had Superstars like Kamal Haasan, Rajnikanth, Chiranjeevi, Mammooty and Mohan Lal rise to stardom by delivering Mega Hit films. The films were made in such a way that satisfied their fan following. Every movie they acted earned well at the box office and left unforgettable impressions in the minds of their fans. This coupled with good Music from Music Directors like Ilayaraja took the movie to greater heights. The songs were memorable and even today they are heard back to back on several FM Radio stations. The magic weaved by the songs were unthinkable. S P Balasubramaniyam and KJ Yesudas ruled the vocals. Lots of small budget films with family as the themes did well. Comedy was glorified and the films attained cult status. It was the time when Goundamani-Senthil duo reached maximum stardom and the beginning of the Vadivelu-Vivek era. The performances by these Comedians are even remembered and followed big even today. The Action sequences were redefined during this period with Directors like Shankar showed amazing talents in producing them.

Nothing short of South Indian Films, the Hindi movies as well earned big at the box office. It was the time of the Khans when Salman, SRK and Aamir found their roots during this period and delivering hits after hits. This was the time when many Blockbuster records were created in Hindi films. It was the time when triangular love stories found prominence. Anu Malik, Nadeem Shravan and Jatin Lalit ruled the period. Most of the songs are listenable even today. Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayanan and Alka Yagnik mesmerized the song lovers. The movies were young and fresh. Although there wasn’t much Action based films, romance thrived this period. Tips and T-Series produced many films which gave much importance to Music. Lots of Pop Albums as well had a glorious run. This was the time when Hindi films started to change gears. Madhuri Dixit and Karishma Kapoor were the darlings of the country. Yash Raj Films produced lots of several blockbuster films. Directors like David Dhawan made several likeable Comedy films that made filmgoers be on a laugh riot.

This period was evergreen. Those who were born in the 80s were able to fully enjoy these movies. The style of Rajnikanth, classic comedy performance from Kamal Haasan, National Award winning act from Mammooty and a shirtless Salman Khan – were all remembered and fancied. Most of the films were well appreciated and people could relate them with their life. Life’s various problems, social issues, people’s emotions were well presented. There wasn’t any vulgar films or over horrific action sequences. Everything were within limits and the movies were full of life. People laughed and cried with movies. People went on roof when love succeeded and were in tears when it was broken. The audiences of 90s were in their teens and had a satisfying feel by watching and growing with these kinds of movies and songs. Even today people forget themselves on hearing Kumar Sanu. It surely brings tears even now in this world of virtual reality. People flooded Cinema Theatres and there was no piracy. Movies flourished and people watched the same movies repeatedly to get more of it.

Being a person who thoroughly enjoyed 90s, movies were a greater sense of learning and entertainment. Personally Salman Khan is my favorite actor and K J Yesudas/Kumar Sanu/Alka Yagnik are my favorite playback singers. The triangular love story movies and their screenplay – their freshness – their star cast – their songs remains stable  in my mind even today. Whenever I feel down and depressed, a catch of these wonderful songs in TV refreshes my mind and energises me. Teenage is the period which is refreshing and remembered permanently for life. It is the time when we try to understand and explore life. It is the time when me make mistakes – lose -suffer, learn and grow. These moments fill permanent space in our life and never cease to die. It is those memories that stay long forever and never gets beaten by other memories that follow. Indian Movies were at their best during the 90s and that makes a good reason to celebrate the 90s.
