Dominance of Spanish Football Clubs

It is tough for an English club to win the premier league than Barcelona/Real Madrid to win La Liga. The premier league is more physical and requires greater fitness for the players to be on top of the games and win the league. However even an injured Messi or Ronaldo can bring goals to their clubs in La Liga. Having said that is Premier league the best in the world? In terms of the battle and number of abled clubs challenging the title, yes! However, the Spanish Clubs have been the best in European competitions.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been dominating UEFA Champions league over the last decade and the feat they have achieved is phenomenal. Both the clubs have reached Quarter final and Semi Finals for record times than any other English/Other clubs. English clubs have been battling hard even to reach the round of 16. Although Arsenal have the record of qualifying for Champions League continuously over the last 2 decades, they have struggled a lot to overcome the round of 16.

Atletico Madrid and Sevilla has own the Europa League multiple times over the last 2 decades. Clubs like Valencia too has performed well in Europe’s second division. Both Atletico Madrid and Sevilla has grown several players and sold to other clubs for higher profits. Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa, Diego Forlan, Mario Mandžukić and now Antoine Griezmann – all have been stars with Atletico Madrid and were transferred to other clubs for a good sum. Juan Mata and David Silva are the decorated players now who earlier came from Valencia.

Spanish dominance is clearly seen in European games with the other countries’ clubs torn apart. Messi and Ronaldo have won the Ballon D’ors between them for almost 10 years and they are still growing strong. Record after record is being broken by them in La Liga and UEFA Champions League. It is true that they being from clubs with good financial strength have the best players in the midfield to give them power and strength. Barcelona has the greatest midfield power and Real Madrid have amazing power in the wings. Although their defence is not as best as the Italian clubs, they dominate matches due to their attacking strength.

Only time will tell if Paul Pogba/Paulo Dybala/Douglas Costa/Neymar/Coutinho/Salah could even come closer to Messi/Ronaldo. Even though Dani Alves, Neymar, Xavi and Puyol have departed Barcelona they still have the likes of fresh Rakitic and Paulinho in the midfield to give strength to Messi and Suarez. Although Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira, Angel Di Maria and Higuain have departed Real Madrid they have Bale, Modric, Morata to provide the forwards key passes to win games.

After nearly a decade Liverpool has reached the Champions league finals against Real Madrid and already fears have sprung on getting battered by Real Madrid despite the injury woes of Ronaldo/Bale. Although Salah and Mane can provide goals, a final is too intense and even a minor error can cause the team to lag. And when they lag, the other team presses and scores more. Speculations have already begun on this being a one sided final with Real Madrid the favourites to win the trophy for record three times in a row (and 4 times in 5 years). Real’s power and experience will be tough to overcome for the young Liverpool side.

Atletico Madrid are the favorites to win the game with Fernando Torres looking for lost glory perhaps for the past time with the club. Antoine Griezmann is on fire and with Diego Costa back and with the best defence Atletico are almost certain to win the Europa League which they are used to winning. This year may be belongs to Spain and if this is done might give them a big boost in FIFA World Cup 2018. With Brazil and Germany alongside being the top contenders, Spain might look to make the most with club level achievements this year. And for Italian and English clubs, Spain and Spanish clubs will continue to be a nightmare for at least another 5 years. Vivo Espana !!!
